WEEK COMMENCING 14 JANUARY 2018

Your weekly Q&A Session with Chestnut Products

Hello again!

I think I may have confused some people last week when I said ‘under the new regime’ which was meant to refer to the new format of only three questions a week. That’s the only regime change around here, we haven’t been taken over or bought out, we’re the same people we’ve always been. Whether you see that as a good or bad thing is up to you!!

Onto some questions..

A caller asked about the best way to apply Finishing Oil over Cellulose Sanding Sealer…to which the answer is don’t! Oils want to penetrate the timber and sealing it first will inhibit this, oils really should go onto unsealed wood. (Stains are ok, they dont’ seal the surface.)

We had an odd one recently from someone making a box to hold joss sticks. What finish should be used as the joss sticks have ‘melted’ the Melamine Lacquer. We can’t find out why this is happening (we can’t find out what’s in the joss sticks) but we are assured that something in them attacks finishes and makes an awful mess.
The best answer is probably to leave them bare or line with material, but it’s an interesting thing to know and worth bearing in mind if you get asked to make such a box!

Last one for this week, are the Acrylic Sanding Sealer spray (and the other acrylic aerosols) damaged by frost in the same way as the non-aerosol versions?
Whilst cold will affect the propellant and how well they spray, they shouldn’t freeze and damage. Just beware of using them in cold, damp conditions as this can affect the final finish.

And there you have it! We’ll be along with more next week, look forward to seeing you then.

All the best

Terry
